Episode #14: Rescuing Dogs with Special Needs with Lisa Mattuchio of Eddie’s Ranch

Do you dream of opening an animal rescue? Or maybe there’s a soft spot in your heart for “hard-to-adopt” dogs? For this episode we’re joined by Lisa Mattuchio (known on social as @eddieonwheels) who runs Eddie’s Ranch—a rescue inspired by her late beloved rescue dog.

Lisa is here to pull back the proverbial doggy door on what it takes to start an animal rescue from scratch and the special bonds we create with dogs with disabilities.

We chat about:

  • The first steps that Lisa took to open up Eddie’s Ranch [1:00]
  • Why Lisa prioritizes senior and special-needs animals [8:15]
  • Pushing through the intimidation of caring for a special needs animal [12:20]
  • What a typical day running the rescue looks like [18:00]
  • The hardest part about rescue [26:15]

Highlights from the episode:

  • 10:48 — Bonding with special-needs dogs — There is not a bond like taking care of a dog with a disability. There isn't … I've had so many dogs in my life, and I have loved everybody, obviously. But what I learned from Eddie, the bond with the dog that truly needs you to live, they need you to survive, they can't walk, they can't get to their water, they can't that bond becomes really an amazing bond. You just bond more than the dog that runs to the back door and you let them out. It doesn't mean I don't love that dog any less. But the bond is pretty special with a dog with a disability. I mean, it just is and it's unless you have one and live it, you don't understand.
  • 14:24 — Adjusting to caring for a new dog — It's patience and it's time, and the dog will tell you what they need. You know, and then it's it just becomes a routine. It truly does, and it doesn't take a long time. You just have to pay attention to the dog's needs, and you become a team.”
  • 34:57 — Supporting your local rescues — There are so many opportunities to help your local rescue and shelter. Do you have extra blankets and towels in your house? Instead of bringing them to Savers of Goodwill, I bet your rescue your local rescue could use them because then dogs and cats have new bedding to lay on. I mean, there's just so many opportunities for everybody to help shelter and rescue animals. And, you know, they're out there. You just gotta look, and they're definitely out there.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
